What is a Neuropsychologist?
A neuropsychologist is a professional who specializes in understanding the relationship between the brain and behavior. They conduct assessments to evaluate cognitive functions such as memory, attention, problem-solving, and language. Neuropsychologists use a variety of standardized tests and clinical interviews to identify cognitive impairments and develop tailored treatment plans.
Why Might You Need a Neuropsychologist?
There are several reasons why individuals may seek the expertise of a neuropsychologist:
Cognitive Concerns: If you or a loved one is experiencing memory loss, difficulty concentrating, or other cognitive issues, a neuropsychologist can provide a comprehensive evaluation.
Brain Injury: After a traumatic brain injury, a neuropsychologist can assess the extent of cognitive impairment and guide rehabilitation efforts.
Neurological Conditions: Conditions such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and multiple sclerosis can affect cognitive functioning. Neuropsychologists can help in diagnosing and managing these conditions.
Emotional and Behavioral Issues: Neuropsychologists also evaluate emotional and behavioral changes that may be linked to brain function, providing insights into treatment options.
Pre-op psychological evaluations: bariatric surgery, brain stimulator implants, organ transplant surgeries require a psychological evaluation before the procedure. Dr. LeMaire has expertise in this area with her knowledge of both the medical and psychological aspects that need to be addressed and considered.
When Should You Consider a Neuropsychological Evaluation?
You might consider a neuropsychological evaluation if:
You notice changes in memory or cognitive abilities.
Your physician recommends further assessment following a neurological event such as a heart attack, stroke, suspicion of Alzheimer's, or even just trying to find out, "Is this normal aging or should I be concerned?"
You are seeking a deeper understanding of cognitive issues that standard assessments have not adequately addressed.
