Synergistic Play Therapy for Children (SPT)

Katy Psychological Services

Sessions take place in a specially designed playroom where the child is given the freedom to express themselves through play while the therapist remains attuned and responsive to what emerges. Rather than directing the child toward a specific outcome, the therapist follows the child’s lead, helping to regulate the child’s nervous system in real time as difficult emotions arise. Parents play an important role throughout treatment and will receive regular updates and guidance on how to support their child between sessions. Treatment length varies depending on the child’s presenting concerns and history. Mrs. Katie Robertson, our SPT specialist, can give you a better idea of an estimate of sessions after she has the chance to meet and discuss your specific needs.

SPT is offered for children ages 5 to 12 who are experiencing behavioral challenges, ADHD, trauma, emotional dysregulation, or adjustment difficulties related to parental separation or divorce.

SPT is a newer model and it's developers describe it as "research informed". This is because SPT has not yet been studied in large clinical trials on its own. However, the core principles it draws from including neuroscience, attachment theory, and nervous system regulation are very well-supported by decades of research. The broader evidence base for play therapy as a whole is also strong, with randomized controlled trials demonstrating meaningful improvements in behavioral concerns, trauma symptoms, and emotional regulation in children. Research has also found structured play therapy effective in improving adjustment and reducing depression in children ages 9 to 12 whose parents have divorced. Feel free to schedule with Mrs. Katie Robertson, here at KPS to see if SPT is a good fit for your child.

Synergistic Play Therapy for Children (SPT)

Synergistic Play Therapy (SPT) is a neuroscience-based, relational model of play therapy that blends the therapeutic power of play with nervous system regulation, attachment theory, mindfulness, and interpersonal neurobiology. Most children cannot talk through their problems the way adults do. Play is their language. SPT meets children where they are developmentally, using the therapeutic relationship itself to help them process difficult experiences and build the emotional skills they need to thrive at home and school.
