Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
Katy Psychological Services
Whether seeking support as an adult or exploring options for a child or teen, EMDR therapy offers a structured, evidence-based path toward healing from past experiences that have too strong a grasp on the present.
EMDR follows eight phases, and the pace is adjusted to feel right for each individual client. Sessions begin with a full history and ensuring the client has the tools to feel grounded and safe throughout the process. From there, the psychologist and client identify the specific memories or experiences that are keeping them stuck and work through them together.
During the processing phase, the client focuses on a target memory while the psychologist guides them through bilateral stimulation. This could be eye movements, gentle taps, or tones. After each short set, the client shares what they noticed. This process continues until the memory no longer carries the same emotional weight. Every session ends with grounding techniques so the client leaves feeling calm and in control, never uneasy or unsettled. Over time, the memories and situations that once felt overwhelming are replaced with healthier and more neutral responses, allowing the client to heal and move forward.
The number of sessions varies by individual. Those with a single traumatic event may complete treatment in as few as 3 to 6 sessions, while those with more complex trauma histories typically require 12 or more sessions on a weekly basis. Your therapist can work with you after talking through your needs after the first session on an estimate that would be right for you.

What is EMDR?
EMDR allows individuals to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that have built up over time due to a disturbing event or cumulative life experiences
EMDR has strong research support for reducing trauma symptoms, relieving depression associated with traumatic experiences, with or without a formal diagnosis of trauma. Risks are minimal. The most commonly reported side effect is temporary negative thoughts or feelings between sessions, which the therapist will help clients navigate, and will always work at their own pace.
Effective for past traumatic experiences
