Does my child have a learning disability such as Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, or Dyscalculia?
-
Dyslexia is so much more than the common misconception of letter or number reversals. Children with dyslexia can have trouble sounding out and blending words. They often have phonemic awareness difficulties. Sight words don't seem to stick, even though they may be able to pass their spelling tests. In other types of dyslexia, sounding out words is not the problem, instead, they rush through and mistake the first letter of a word for a visually similar word. For children with dyslexia, reading comprehension often suffers because they misread and substitute many common words for other words (e.g., these for tree).
-
Dysgraphia is a disorder of written language. Children with dysgraphia have difficulty with letter formations, often misspell the same word different ways, frequent cross outs, upper case mixed with lower case letters, handwriting is sloppy or illegible, and they express frustration with the writing process.
-
Dyscalcula is a math disorder. Children may have difficulty learning their math facts, reverse their numbers (sometimes not always), and have trouble with math story problems.
We conduct testing for dyslexia, dysgraphia, and/or dyscalculia to find out why a child is struggling academically and provide you with interventions on what steps to take next.
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD)
There are 3 subtypes of ADHD:
ADHD Inattentive Type (formerly known as ADD)
ADHD Hyperactive-Impulsive Type
ADHD Combined Type (Inattentive, Hyperactive, Impulsive symptoms combined)
Some common symptoms include trouble focusing, inattentive, forgetful, daydreaming, or even "lazy" and "unmotivated". These are some terms used to describe this condition. ADHD is most commonly diagnosed before the age of 7, but if you have a mild version you may have gone through grade school and even most of your life without a formal diagnosis. The inattentive type is commonly known as ADD, but it's actually an outdated term, the correct form is "ADHD Inattentive Type". It's defined by having difficulty with focus, a short attention span, difficulty starting and completing work. Add in fidgeting, difficulty sitting still, restlessness, and overactive, interrupting others, impulsive, or "always on the go" and that describes the hyperactive-inattentive type.
So how do you know if you need to be tested? If your symptoms are interfering with your daily life (e.g., work, school, home) and they are bothersome to you, then it may be worth testing. Our Katy psychologists conduct testing screenings for ADD/ADHD. More comprehensive testing for ADD/ADHD when a differential diagnosis may be needed or if you need a current evaluation to justify ACT, SAT, GRE, or LSAT accommodations (see ADHD Comprehensive Evaluation below).
